A brief summary of the journey of the Home-Made Helpings project!

We started off with the idea of creating a social media project that would revolve around family recipes and the stories and memories behind them. We instantly dived into the social media world to try and get this project kickstarted!

We created a trailer to try and generate interest and show people what we were all about!

Call-out draft

A draft for call-out that Michael just cooked up… We all have a special memory about food in our lives: Mum or Dad’s specialty dinner that they only cook on certain occasions, that one time you experimented in the kitchen and it went horribly wrong, a recipe from your childhood that you wish you had now.

In the first four weeks of the project, we focused on providing our own content we had created ourselves, in order to attract an audience to our page. These would also form the basis for our first articles for the project, such as another recipe video we made.

We also wanted to follow up our created content with questions and different methods for the audience to get involved and talking about oru work over Facebook and Twitter!

We even received some recipe requests from our audience, which we thought was a great form of interaction

Which of course, was a request we couldn’t pass up. So we went and made a video of us attempting to recreate this recipe!

Our Facebook interactions were looking good, and we found that giving shoutout to other pages were a great way to interact and garner some attention for ourselves. Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours!

We also tried to go beyond the shoutout, and make a deeper connection with the individuals who run these pages. Through successful one-to-one interaction, we were able to conduct an email interview with a Facebook user and active food blogger, who provided us with much detail about his family life, his food stories and love of cooking! This formed arguably our most successful Tumblr article for our project.

Another interview with Monika

After the interview with Anthony last week, this week we choose to interview another girl who simply loves cooking: Monika, a 30 years old professional, who moved to Australia from Bangladesh 7 years ago.

To wrap up the project, we decided to provide a few more recipes on our Tumblr, and start winding down our activity on our social media pages

Remember when you were a kid, and used to watch The Lion King, the scene when he has to eat bugs and worms in the jungle? Timon and Pumbaa make eatin bugs look like fun like they would taste like jelly worms and stuff but I doubt that’s what they taste like for real!! However, I once heard a cook on the TV say that soon we will be eatin more insects like it’s a normal thing to do. He even put fried worms on a pizza for some kids AND THEY ATE IT! He had put ketchup in the worms though so I think that was sorta cheatin. Anyway… MAYBE you could try to eat ONE worm just to see if it had ketchup in it like that, or you can try the Vietnamese way, which is to use actual worms with eggs to make this delicious “cha ruoi” (fried egg with “ruoi”)

Fried egg with “ruoi”

Ingredients

300gr “ruoi”
2 eggs
Sliced orange peels
Chopped onion, chilli and dill
Fish sauce, pepper.

Method

Wash “ruoi” in hot water till its clean and let it dry

Put “ruoi” in a big bowl and mix up with eggs, sliced orange peels, chopped onion, chilli and dill along with some fish sauce.

Meat-lovers can put some minced pork in the mix. It’ll still taste delicious and also a little bit less “wormy”!

Put the mixture in a pan and fry until it turns golden.

Put the delicious food onto a big plate and season with some pepper. Vietnamese people enjoy this “special” fried egg with some fish sauce mix with some lime and chilli!

CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL - A BOWL FULL OF MEMORIES

Dessert is one of the most loveable courses. Your tummy is already full, but the temptation of something sweet is too enticing. Eating dessert with your family is great, but over the weekend Melbourne hosted the ‘Chocolate Rush festival’ – an assortment of chocolate stalls, competitions and tastings. Making the trip with my dad and younger sister, it was a bonding session over the greatest food in the world – chocolate. With everything from coconut hot chocolate, macaroons and organic dark chocolate coffee beans, our taste for everything chocolate had us feeling quite ill by the time we left. One of my personal favourites was the chocolate fondue stand which brought back some great memories from my chilchood. Sliced strawberries and bananas drizzled with hot melted chocolate took me back to my Nana’s favourite dessert for her grandchildren – sticky, messy chocolate – every parents worst nightmare. She used to bring out her little fondue fountain, give us all skewers and bowls of fruit or marshmallows and we would go to town on smothering them with the chocolate. Once nearly all the chocolate was either in our tummys, or splashed across our mouths and fingers, we would all lean over the sink and get scrubbed one by one!
